A Brew Review…
Ever have one of those “well, um, actually pretty nice little Saturdays, going to go to Home Depot and buy some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed, Bath, & Beyond (Costco in my case), don’t know if you’ll have enough time”? Well, I did! Trying to get over to Costco and I hear rumors of a new Brewery in the area…

The Shop Beer Co in Tempe, AZ- Surprisingly, this is a pretty frequent stop for us, but we always forget to take pics, so here are a few from Christmas time up to our visit a couple weeks ago. Getting distracted by beer just happens and I guess we just take for granted that we will be back there soon.
The Shop Beer Co isn’t really easy to find, but it is worth the effort. It’s a small little spot with a lot of brewing space and growing quickly thanks to some amazing beers. There really isn’t much inside, feels like a fun old dive bar, but it’s got a great patio. There is plenty of airport noise, but it’s just a fun spot with good beer and close to ASU. We’re really excited to see how it all looks when they finish their expansions that look like they will be done any time now. I personally always have a few Church Music stays in my beer fridge, but anytime we stop by, I always try whatever Neonic(s) are on draught and anything else new because I love their creativity.
Food? Food trucks only, but they have some good regulars.
Restrooms? Funky, old, cool and clean.
Merch? I know I have a few things already, so no need to keep adding to the collection, but they have something for everyone.
All we can really say is go try their beers, you will not be disappointed!

Barrio Brewing Co in Tucson, AZ- I have to start by saying there are a lot of other places in AZ I would like to visit besides Tucson, but it has it`s bright spots…beer. So, anytime I do get a chance to head south, I like to plan out which breweries to visit because there are A LOT now.
Barrio Brewing was first on my list last trip. Their location just always looked so cool from the outside and somehow, I had not been. I honestly, don’t think I came close to exploring the full place, so another visit is probably needed, but it didn’t disappoint. It’s hard to describe, but it feels like an industrial western setting and very eclectic, yet comfortable. We got there and it was already packed at about 1 PM, so we grabbed a table, a flight and some snacks to start our brewery hopping. Three out of my four pours were very good and their Blonde ale usually finds it way in my fridge a few times a year.
Food? It’s a robust menu, but I need bread to start my drinking journey, so pretzels and beer cheese hit the spot. We also had wings and chips at the table and nobody was complaining.
Restrooms? They fit the surroundings, so eclectic, cool, pretty clean and operational.
Merch? So many hats to choose from it was overload for me, but one made it home with me. They had ton’s of other fun shirts and souvenirs, so there is something for anyone.
Barrio is worth a visit just to explore, but the beer and food will make you happy you stopped by.

Tombstone Brewing in Pheonix, AZ- Tombstone North opened up this location about a month or two before I moved to the other side of the valley. My first visit was summer and about 120 out, so I’m glad I made it back over now that it is March and only 95 out.
It was so hot the first time we stopped by they had their frozen drinks going and they really hit this spot. This time, I got to enjoy a couple flights and I’d say 5 of 8 were excellent, with my favorite being their It’s Always Sunny hazy, which I happily brought a couple 4 packs home with me. The layout works well aside from the lack of outdoor space, with a good size bar, plenty of table seating, enough TV’s (but not overloaded) and some darts and games scattered about the place. We sat at the bar and enjoyed some good beer, had a bite to eat and chatted with the staff, who were great.
Food? Each time I’ve been there, I wanted to order something different, but I’ve never strayed away from their pretzel and cheese. It’s delicious and was plenty for me and my girlfriend to split, but there are tons of other good looking items on the menu.
Restrooms? They have some cool fixtures and I don’t know why, but I love a keg urinal. It feels like I’m recycling, lol. They are nice, clean and maybe enviornmental?
Merch? The first time I was there I didn’t realize they had so much, but I still don’t have a hat in my collection. I’ll be back soon to pick one up, but they have nice selection.
Tombstone North’s beer and pretzels alone is definitely worth the visit.

Wren House Brewing in Phoenix, AZ- Arizona has got a pretty amazing craft beer scene, we probably don’t get enough credit for all the great breweries and beers out here in the desert. It’s scorching in the summer, but what’s better than an ice cold craft beer or starting now when it’s 96 degrees out in March!
Wren House is definitely one of those breweries and I can’t recall the last time I didn’t have one of their Spellbinder’s in my beer fridge. They are growing quickly and I have not been there in person for a little while. So, while out doing some brewery “research” in the area, I had to stop to see what was new. This location is tiny, but it’s fun. They have a nice little patio, cozy little nooks to crawl in to and a house cat! It’s one of those places where you may need to actually talk and get to know people because it’s so snug and there are no TV’s, so screen time is limited to your phone. I’m a fan of TV, I like watching sports, but they have great beer and I was happy to just sit there with my amazing girlfriend and talk about my beers and only my beers.
Food? Food trucks only and I think you can BYOFood, if you like. I’ve never done either, but I’m sure they have a decent rotation of food trucks weekly.
Restrooms? This is a comfortable old space and the bathrooms serviceable and clean, which is enough.
Merch? There is plenty to choose from, but I already own a few little keepsakes and did not add anything more on this visit.
Fate has multiple locations now and their Ahwatukee and Prescott locations are on my list of places to visit as soon as possible. The beer is their focus and it shows, so if you are close to one of their locations, stop by for a couple and make friends with some people.

Fate is the only other one ready to go.
Fate Brewing in Phoenix, AZ- So, we’ve been to a couple of Fate’s other locations and they are always a good experience, but this is our first brewery review on them and it happens to be their newest location.
Fate always seems to have a nice set up and this one is the nicest to date. It’s got a great patio as you walk up to the brewery with games, fire pits and doors that open up on those nicer afternoons, or mornings, if you start early like us. The place feels brand new and as much as we like a fun eclectic hideout, we’d never complain about an open and modern brewery, especially when they make good food and beer. As you walk in, there is a island bar, sort of Cheers like and different types of seating throughout the rest of the space.
Food? so many options, but I seem to stick to the chips and guac and tacos, so we shared. I’ve never had a bad meal though, but I like to keep room for the important stuff, the beer. We had some other guests, so a meat lovers pizza also made itself sharable and it was very good.
Restrooms? The place is new and they did them right, so of course, they were one of the nicest to date. Merch? There is plenty to choose from, but I already own one as part of my collection, but rest assure, there is plenty of memorabilia if you’re looking for something to remember them by.
Fate has multiple locations now days, but this new flagship location is worth stopping by. The beer and food are excellent and they have something for everyone, if you need to bring the whole family.

UPDATE: NOW CLOSED 😢 Both AZ locations are permanently closed. Sad to hear to hear and we wish them the best. 🍻
Buqui Bichi in Phoenix, AZ. A couple months back we went out to a beer festival in downtown Phoenix and after about 15 or so 2 oz pours, we decided we’d walk to one of the many breweries in the area. Luckily for us, we found a newer one to The Valley and definitely new to us, so said goodbye to the festival and walked on over to Buqui Bichi.
We had no idea what to expect, but this place was open, modern and had some great beer and food options. There was a large bar as you walked in, tons of table seating and even though the patio was closed, you can tell how nice it would be on a sub 90 degree afternoon. It was not very crowded, but there was several events going on downtown and after being shoulder to shoulder with festival folks for a couple hours, it was nice to relax with a full pint (plus a flight) and a bite to eat. The majority of the beers were very good and I grabbed a few to go cans to enjoy from home.
Food? We were told we had to try the wings and they definitely did not disappoint! Crispy, flavorful and delicious. They had several other options, but we were overflowing with beer, so the wings were enough to hit the spot.
Restrooms? I’m pretty sure they were community restrooms for the building, but functional and mostly clean, so enough said. Merch? They had a lot of merch in a couple places around the brewery and I did buy myself a Cinco De Mayo hat to add to my collection.
If you happen to be downtown for work or heading to a game, you should definitely stop by Buqui Bichi for a couple beers and lets us know if you like their wings as much as we did!

Helluva Brewing in Chandler, AZ- About a month ago when a few cohorts and I were doing some brewery hopping, we finally made our way out to Chandler to see Helluva. I’m not sure why it took me so long, but I’m glad I made it.
Helluva has one heckuva set up. It’s not your neighborhood cozy brewery, but it’s laid out really well with a huge bar as you walk in and the brewing equipment all lit up in the background. They had a lot of great beers to choose from, but I think my favorite of my flight was their Juice is Loose. Most of the choices were excellent though.
Food? There are plenty of options and since we were just getting started on our journey, we decided to load up on some. We split pretzels, corn brat bites and the buffalo chicken dip. I didn’t love the dip, but everything else was on point.
Restrooms? They were one of the nicer lavatories I’ve had the pleasure to do business in. Clean, simple, but cool. Merch? Their entry had a decent display of items, but I did not see a hat I wanted to add to my collection. Next time, I’m sure I’ll convince myself I need one though.
If you’re in the Chandler area, definitely get yourself over to Helluva for a couple cold ones, maybe some food and check out the restrooms, should you eel the urge :).

Liars Bench in Portsmouth, NH- On my New Years trip out to Maine, my amazing girlfriend suggested an overnight trip to Portsmouth to do some sightseeing, shopping and, most likely, plenty of drinking. After brewery crawling through most of Portland, ME the previous two days, I was on board for a little drive, as long as we stopped at some breweries on the way! We did stop at plenty, lol, and those reviews will me coming over the next month or so…
Luckily for me, it was a cold, overcast and rainy day, so we pretty much stuck to the drinking part and Liars Bench was a short, umbrella covered, walk away. This place felt comfortable and welcoming as soon as you stepped inside and it was busy! I can see why though, they had good beer, plenty of outdoor space, which I wish we could have enjoyed and a friendly staff. It’s the kind of spot that feels like a cozy hidden gem and we spent two beers there thawing out a little bit before heading on to the next stop.
Food? There are plenty of options, but we had dinner reservations and were sticking to just the beer for now. The menu looked great and had I not promised my girlfriend a nice dinner, I would have tried every hotdog on the menu!.
Restrooms? Nothing special to write about, but I dried off and relieved myself in them, so I’d say perfectly functional. Merch? They had a small display of items, but I did not see a hat I wanted to add to my collection, plenty of other items if you are just looking for a keepsake though!
If you’re lucky enough to visit Portsmouth, make sure Liars Bench in on you list and if you make, let me know how the hotdogs are because I won’t be back until next year!

First trip to Portsmouth to enjoy some New Hampshire beers. I had two on our stop to Liars Bench. No Dice was a really nice Pilsner that went perfectly with my new Sotally Tober beanie and Beer Hunter Hoodie. Links in the profile 🛒
Full brewery review of Liars Bench coming Saturday. Great place and can’t wait until I’m in the area again!

Austin St Brewery – Portland, ME- Every year for the last five years, I`ve made the pilgrimage to Maine post-Christmas to visit my girlfriend’s family, which also conveniently coincides with my annual brewery-hopping mission to drink as much beer as time (and weather) will allow. Last year was no different. Neither rain, sleet, nor snow wasn going to stop us from strolling around Portland like craft beer enthusiasts on a mission. And Austin St Brewery quickly became one of my favorites.
Austin St serves up some really good beer, and had I not been on a very tight schedule of “hit as many breweries as possible before dinner,” I definitely would’ve stuck around for more pints (and maybe a few bites). The place has a cozy vibe that makes you want to sink into a chair, grab a cold one, and cuddle up next to their warm electric fireplace.
The patio looks amazing too, and I can only imagine how awesome it would be on a nice summer day, with the doors open and the sun shining. But since it was late December in Maine, we were more focused on not turning into human popsicles than enjoying the outdoors.
Food? Well, let’s just say I was one beer away from dinner plans and too many beers deep to be making any decisions about food. So, we stuck to what we knew best: more beer.
Merch? As someone from Arizona (where beanies are as rare as snow in July), I wasn`t surprised to see that out east, it’s all about the beanies. And, of course, I bought one as a gift for my drinking buddy. However, I must report that Austin St was a tragic no-hat zone on my visit.
Bathrooms? Clean, functional, and honestly, that’s all you can ask for. They’re basic, but definitely up to the task of making sure your experience doesn’t involve any unwanted surprises.
In short, Austin St Brewery is tucked right in the heart of Portland, ME, and it’s one of my favorite spots in one of my favorite cities. Seriously, when you can walk to dozens of amazing breweries (including one literally in the same parking lot) how can you complain?
